The settings are easy for a beginner to use, the extra length of the add-on arm is great for longer items, and it comes with all the attachments I need when I'm quilting (I'm a beginning quilter but haven't used this machine for it yet--I completed my first quilt on an awesome old borrowed Kenmore), and I've found that the straight stitching is just as good as the fancy stitching when using regular materials. I ordered my machine with the hope that mine would be one of the one's that worked well from the start. As soon as it arrived I sewed some sample stitches to make sure it worked. I tried the fancy stitches and couldn't get them to work but thought I just needed to read the manual to see how to do it. I was very busy going to school at the time. I did some alterations for a friend and it worked great for that. Almost 3 months after I got it I finished school and decided to do my first big project, 20 backpacks for a 4 year old's camping theme birthday party. I sewed a little bit one day and shut it off. The next day it wouldn't sew. I was mad at myself for not really trying it more when I first got it. I took it in the shop, afraid it might not still be covered. IT WAS! It took 3 weeks for me to get it back (backpacks got done with the old $49.00 machine)it didn't cost me anything for the repairs but they has to replace the motor and the computer board (that's why the fancy stitches didn't work) IT WORKS GREAT NOW AND I LOVE IT! (like others, I'm not crazy about the plastic bobbin cover but it's easy to see how much thread you have left) I think it is worth the gamble that you might get one of the good ones. My suggestion though is, really try it out the way you intend to really use it to make sure it works well. Now that mine is one of the good ones too and I know I will be happy with it for years to come.
